Guide to Working in the UK for Foreign Nationals

In order to come and live and work in the UK, you may need to apply for a Visa/Work Permit.  Please find below some information that we thought may be helpful to you.

EEA (European Economic Area) and Swiss Nationals can enter, live and work in the UK without permission.  There are however, a few exceptions to this and some nationals do not automatically have the right to work here.

  • Nationals from countries that joined the EU in 2004 may need to register to work in the UK.  The countries that joined the EU in 2004 are as follows:
    • Cyprus
    • Czech Republic
    • Estonia
    • Hungary
    • Latvia
    • Lithuania
    • Malta
    • Poland
    • Slovakia
    • Slovenia

    Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are not members of the EU, but nationals from these countries have the same rights to live and work in the UK as EU citizens.

    British Overseas Territories Citizens residing in the countries listed below**, are not subject to UK Immigration Control but do however, need to hold a valid British passport endorsed British citizen.

    **Anguilla, Falkland Islands, Ducie and Oeno Islands, Bermuda, Gibraltar, St Helena and Dependencies, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Antarctic Territory, Montserrat, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, The Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekella, Pitcairn, Turks and Caicos Islands, Cayman Islands, Henderson & The Virgin Islands.
